Review of Are You There Vodka, It's me Chelsea

Product Details
Hardcover: 264 pages
Publisher: Simon Spotlight Entertainment; 1ST edition (April 22, 2008)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1416954120
ISBN-13: 978-1416954125

Synopsis from BarnesandNoble.com
THE EAGERLY AWAITED COLLECTION OF PERSONAL ESSAYS FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF MY HORIZONTAL LIFEWhen Chelsea Handler needs to get a few things off her chest, she appeals to a higher power -- vodka. You would too if you found out that your boyfriend was having an affair with a Peekapoo or if you had to pretend to be honeymooning with your father in order to upgrade to first class. Welcome to Chelsea's world -- a place where absurdity reigns supreme and a quick wit is the best line of defense. In this hilarious, deliciously skewed collection, Chelsea mines her past for stories about her family, relationships, and career that are at once singular and ridiculous. Whether she's convincing her third-grade class that she has been tapped to play Goldie Hawn's daughter in the sequel to Private Benjamin, deciding to be more egalitarian by dating a redhead, or looking out for a foulmouthed, rum-swilling little person who looks just like her...only smaller, Chelsea has a knack for getting herself into the most outrageous situations. Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea showcases the candor and irresistible turns of phrase that have made her one of the freshest voices in comedy today.

My Review:

I listen to the audio version of this book. The author herself read the book. It made you feel like you were at one of her shows. She did not let and race, nationality or animal for that matter out of her jokes.

Ms. Handler's style is slightly sarcastic but she had me in stitches at times. You felt like you got to know her families quirks, her likes and dislikes and something about her ex-boyfriends.She would be a cool person to hang out with.

This book was a not as good as her first The Horizontal Life but it was typical Chelsea. I read on her website she has a third book coming out soon and I hope to get that.

I would recommend this book for fans of Chelsea because you would not be disappointed. I was not disappointed and I have become a bigger fan of hers through this book.

Product Description from Amazon.com
In this landmark autobiography, five years in the making, Senator Edward M. Kennedy tells his extraordinary personal story--of his legendary family, politics, and fifty years at the center of national events.TRUE COMPASSThe youngest of nine children born to Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, he came of age among siblings from whom much was expected. As a young man, he played a key role in the presidential campaign of his brother John F. Kennedy, recounted here in loving detail. In 1962 he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he began a fascinating political education and became a legislator. In this historic memoir, Ted Kennedy takes us inside his family, re-creating life with his parents and brothers and explaining their profound impact on him. For the first time, he describes his heartbreak and years of struggle in the wake of their deaths. Through it all, he describes his work in the Senate on the major issues of our time--civil rights, Vietnam, Watergate, the quest for peace in Northern Ireland--and the cause of his life: improved health care for all Americans, a fight influenced by his own experiences in hospitals. His life has been marked by tragedy and perseverance, a love of family, and an abiding faith. There have been controversies, too, and Kennedy addresses them with unprecedented candor. At midlife, embattled and uncertain if he would ever fall in love again, he met the woman who changed his life, Victoria Reggie Kennedy. Facing a tough reelection campaign against an aggressive challenger named Mitt Romney, Kennedy found a new voice and began one of the great third acts in American politics, sponsoring major legislation, standing up for liberal principles, and making the pivotal endorsement of Barack Obama for president.Hundreds of books have been written about the Kennedys. TRUE COMPASS will endure as the definitive account from a member of America's most heralded family, an inspiring legacy to readers and to history, and a deeply moving story of a life like no other.

From the Inside Cover: During the twentieth century, the House of Windsor has had its share of difficulties- the abdication crisis of 1936, the very public break-uo of the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales and the death of Diana in 1997 were all dark days for the monarchy. However there has also been much to celebrate- the birth of seven grandchildren to the Queen, the celebration of her Silver and Golden Wedding Anniversaries with the Duke of Edinburgh, and most recently the Queens Golden Jubilee of 2002
The Royal Family has never before been so accessible: Modern technology has allowed the public to follow the lives of the Queen and her family much more closely. Media and public fascination has grwon to unprecedented levels over the last three decades: the House of Windsor has had to adapt to being in the public gaze, and accept the days of unquestioning reverence are long gone. Despite this, the Royal Family is held in high regard by Britons and throughout the world, actingas a focus for national identity, unity and pride, and giving an enduring sense of stability and continuity to many.

Friday 56

1. Grab the book nearest you right now. 2. Turn to page 56. 3. Find the fifth sentence. 4. Post that sentence (plus one or two others if you like). 5. Post a link with your post to Storytime with Tonya and Friends. The closest book to me at the moment is:

Airhead by Meg Cabot.

And the sweet notes of the song he was singing soon lulled me all the way to sleep... but not before I heared, way off in the farthest reaches of my mind, a voice that sounded a lot like that of the lady with the bun in her hair going, " You there! What are you doing in here?"

Thursday Thunks

1. Does soap or shampoo have to really lather up for you to feel that it cleaned thoroughly? Yes, I would like to think so

2. Do you have a long standing joke with someone that you still laugh about every time you talk to that person? Not really I don't think

3. Share something that happened to you this past week that was unusual. There has been nothing usual that has happened to me but I found out my son has a tooth anomaly

4. If you dropped a purple crayon and a green crayon off a roof, which would melt faster in the sun? They would melt at the same time depending on where they land

5. You are standing in line (grocery store, bank, etc.), and someone gets in line behind you that stinks. The stink is so bad that people in line in front of you turn around and look to see if you are the one causing the stink. Do you cover your nose, hold your breath, breathe through your mouth or just get out of line altogether? I think I would move because I have a week stomach for that kind of thing but amazingly I can deal with animal poop more than human funk.

6. If you dropped your cell phone in the toilet, would you fish it out? If so, how much soap would you use to wash your hands afterwards? Yes, I would fish it out and I would use quite a bit. The bad thing is it happened to my hubby and he had to get a new one.

7. Sydney Australia dust storm (link). How long do you think it would take you to clean your house after that sort of dust storm? It would take a month honestly.

8. Do you think you can dance? I think I can dance ok but not enough to make the show.

9. You are out to eat and someone across the room is staring at you. Do you get paranoid, try to ignore them, or go find out why they are staring at you? Ignore them most the time the look away
10. Come up with a crazy, wacky Thursday Thunk question. I can't think of one off the top of my head.

Review of Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

Product Details
Reading level: Young Adult

Paperback: 352 pages
Publisher: HarperCollins (April 29, 2008)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0061214671
ISBN-13: 978-0061214677

Synopsis from BarnesandNoble.com

Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible faeries.

Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty—especially if they learn of her Sight—and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens.

Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible faeries.

Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer.

Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention.

But it's too late. Keenan is the Summer King who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. He is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost—regardless of her plans or desires.

Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; her life; everything.

Faerie intrigue, mortal love, and the clash of ancient rules and modern expectations swirl together in Melissa Marr's stunning 21st century faery tale.

My Review:

While this started out a little slow, It quickly picked up the pace and kept me glued to the book on CD. The narrator's voice was perfect. The story was very good and I looked forward to the next book in the series.

Aislinn is somewhat likeable but I think she thinks too hard for me. Keenan is one of my favorite characters and I found myself getting somewhat upset at the way Aishinn treated him. Seth was ok but I did not really get to know his character since he was not the focus of the novel.

This book was harder to review since it was an audiobook so my thoughts are based on the audio version.

I give this book a 4/5

Review of Manga Shakespeare(Julius Caesar and As You Like It.

From Back Cover:

In one of Shakespeare 's sunniest comedies, the staid and rule-bound world of society is exhanged for the lawlessness and freedom of the forest. Reveresed gender roles create complex love triangles, and rural and urban worlds collide in the manga reinvention of an unparalleled classic.

My Review:

This is an interesting adaption of the Shakespearean play as you like it. It is funny and witty and does venture a little from his actual wording. The setting is different as it is set in modern day Japan in the forest of Ar-den.

The pictures bring the words of Shakespeare to life in an easy to understand format for the upper middle school student/ High school student. This should not be used as a substitute for the orginial which is very good as well but it is meant as study tool to help the student understand the sometimes difficult wording in shakespeare.

I rate this a 4.5/5

From the Back cover:

In newly reimagined Rome, trouble is brewing . Brutus and a group of senators plot the destruction of Julius Caseasar, the charismatic leader who has just been named emperor. Political intrigue, personal betrayal, and the aftermath of a brutal assasination make this story Shakespeare's version of a political thriller, and the perfect fit for the vibrant world of manga.

My Review:

This is another great adapation of Shakepeare in the exciting form of Manga. The pictures help the student to understand the works of a Shakespeare in a readable way. This by no means takes away from reading the actual play but it helps them to reinforce the concepts learned it the play. Unlike As You Like It, this one does not stray as much from the wording. The clothing of the character were not romanesque but the were like superhero type clothing that the kids would relate too.

While my children are not old enough to understand I think this would be a great introduction to Shakepeare. My son rather read Manga than novels. I would use this to introduce him to the wonderful world of Shakepseare.

I rate this a 4.5/5

Review of Fearless by Max Lucado

My Review: This is a book about conquering your fears. The author incorporates Bible passages to help inspire you and to let you know that Jesus too had these fears and he overcame them through the power of prayer. Each chapter contains a different kinds of fears in a very relatable way. The chapters are short and to the point and the author incorporates humor at times. At the end of this book is a discussion guide that you can use for yourself or with a group. It come with a mini book that summarizes the chapters but I did not get a chance to read that.

My thoughts on this book is that is was one of the best non-fiction inspirational books I have read in a long time. He grabs you with the first sentence. He writing style is straight-forward and to the point and never dull. He incorporates the bible verse without sounding too preachy. I would recommend to anyone who is experiencing fear and or anxiety. Mr. Lucado has a lot of other books that I would love to read. I think he will quickly become my favorite author.

I rate this book a 5/5

Two Mini Reviews of the Picture books I read to my daughter

This week I read two books to my daughter that she picked out from the library. My daughter had cute picks this week. She is only 3 yrs old and this is what she picked:

Product Details
Reading level: Ages 4-8
Library Binding: 24 pages
Publisher: Picture Window Books (August 2003)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1404802274
ISBN-13: 978-1404802278

My Review:

This is a cute little book with rhymes to keep the child's attention. While my three-year-old did not get the riddles, she enjoyed the pictures and it kept her attention. The pictures are very colorful which is appropriate for her. She loved naming the animals that came up.

Rating 4/5

The second book is:

Product Details
Reading level: Ages 4-8
Paperback: 32 pages
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing (September 1, 1999)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0689829825
ISBN-13: 978-0689829826

My Review:

This is another cute book. The author really get inside the mind of a school-age child. As we all know kids have huge imaginations and the kid is this book is no exception. He thinks that all the faculty at the school live there and work their but he soon discovers his teacher out about in the community. He is puzzled and thinks she is leading a double life that no one knows about but him. The illustrations are very colorful and they held my daughters attention. She loved the exaggerated picture of the teacher especially the picture where the little boy says the teacher has eyes in the back of her head.

My rating is 5/5 great book for your kids and very appropriate for this season.
