Booking Through Thursday

btt button

Hosted by Deb at Booking Through Thursday

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly event born in 2005. It is essentially a weekly meme consisting of questions about 'about books, authors, reading preferences, that sort of thing.' Participation consists of copying the weekly question, pasting it into a blog post and answering it...then going back to Deb's blog and leaving a comment and trackback.

Which is worse?

Finding a book you love and then hating everything else you try by that author, or

Reading a completely disappointing book by an author that you love?

Worse for me is find a book you love and then hating everything else from the author. Your hopes seem to build up around an author and they keep producing less than ideal work its so disappointing because they have so much potential. I have rarely encountered that.

Thursday Tea

Anastasia at Birdbrain(ed) Book is hosting a weekly event titled: Thursday Tea. She writes:

To play along, all you need is some tea, a book, and the will to answer some very simple questions: what tea are you drinking (and do you like it)? What book are you reading (and do you like it)? Tell us a little about your tea and your book, and whether or not the two go together.

The Tea: Celestial Seasonings Cinnamon Apple Tea

The Book: The Complete Illustrated Guide to The Presidents of America by Professor Jon Roper

The Tea: I really enjoy the tea its the right blend of cinnamon and apple and its all natural. It had very few calories and its relaxing after a long day.

The Book: I finished this book and I loved it I found it very informative. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know about their past and present Commander in Chief.

Thursday Thunks

Welcome to the April 30th version of Thursday Thunks!
(which we always seem to post on Wednesday)
Where we make you think a little bit before you blog!

We pick a subject, and your job is to interpret it anyway you want. Write about it on your blog... simple as that. Maybe you can interpret it as a picture - we don't care!
Please only leave a link if you have written a Thursday Thunks post. Please mention us in your post, and link back to the blog here.
Don't forget to go visit the other participants' blogs. Read and comment about all their Thursday Thunks! Thats what all this is about afterall, isn't it? We'll have so much fun and become lifelong friends....

This week we will answer some crazy questions brought to you by Berleen & Kimber via phone & Skype conference, the color mango and the number 70566.

1. What color is your front door? Black and White

2. We discussed our folks in previous TT so now tell me about your siblings. If you are an only child, tell me whether or not you wanted siblings, older, younger etc. I have 3 sisters, 2 older than me and 1 that is younger. I liked having siblings because you were never alone

3. What color/type butterfly is your favorite? brown, orange and black

4. Will you be celebrating Cinco De Mayo? No

5. Oprah- love her, hate her, or don't care? love her

6. Are you worried about the spread of swine flu? no

7. Hard or soft pillows? Inbetween

8. How many trees are in your neighbor's yard? too many to count.

9. What was the color of the last car you saw? black

10. When does your driver's license expire? 2015

11. Look at the clock on your computer and type the numbers backwards. 246

12. When you put your pants on, what leg do you put in first? right

13. How would you respond to this letter if you were an advice columnist.

I am an ugly woman. I was an ugly baby and child even! It is a fact. I am 36 now and I have never had a boyfriend, and I am still a virgin.

Due to me not having men in my life, I have poured everything I have in to education and my career. At 36 I am the youngest (and first female CEO) at a big, successful, tech company. I have over 200 personal patents and millions of pounds in investments.

I have everything: huge house, holiday villa in Spain, 3 cars, power boat, a race horse, etc. but as much I try to talk myself into everything being “great” I cannot help but to miss that special someone to share it all with.

Most of my friends are married with kids and I feel like I am gradually drifting away from them also.

Where can I find someone to marry an ugly woman?

I would tell them to get some counseling for some self-esteem because I really could not help them gain self-confidence.

A Giveaway from Valerie at Hachette Books of Chaotic Compendum

Book Giveaway - Testimony

Friday, April 24, 2009

Synopsis: At a New England boarding school, a sex scandal is about to
break. Even more shocking than the sexual acts themselves is the fact that they
were caught on videotape. A Pandora's box of revelations, the tape triggers a
chorus of voices--those of the men, women, teenagers, and parents involved in
the scandal--that details the ways in which lives can be derailed or destroyed
in one foolish moment.

Writing with a pace and intensity surpassing even her own greatest work,
Anita Shreve delivers in TESTIMONY a gripping emotional drama with the impact of
a thriller. No one more compellingly explores the dark impulses that sway the
lives of seeming innocents, the needs and fears that drive ordinary men and
women into intolerable dilemmas, and the ways in which our best intentions can
lead to our worst transgressions.

Books I Bought Today at Barnes and Noble

I went to the local Barnes and Noble today looking for more light reads to give me a break from the classics I have been reading. I found two books.

Here is what I found:

I Love a Man in Uniform by Lily Burana

  • Hardcover: 368 pages
  • Publisher: Weinstein Books (April 14, 2009)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1602860831
  • ISBN-13: 978-1602860834

From the inside cover:
A former exotic dancer who once had a penchant for anarchist politics and purple hair dye, Lily's rebellious past never would have suggested a marriage into the military. But then she met Mike a Military Intelligence officer, and fell hopelessly in lover, resulting in a most unorthodox romance poignant, passionate , and utterly unpredictable.

After Lily and Mike said "I do" in a brief, pre-deployment City Hall ceremony, Mike Left for Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Lily was left in a strange town to endure his absence alone , with no support system and little knowledge of the vast and confusing military world in to which she had married.

Upon Mike's return from the war, the couple moved to historic West Point, where Lily found that life on base had its own challenges. As the war continued and the past intruded unexpectedly into the present, Lily and Mike found themselves plunged into the nightmare of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Struggling to cope in a community where admitting weakness is the ultimate taboo and "suck it up" is the suggested response to emotional pain, Lily suffered from depression so severe, it almost ended her marriage. With the help of a revolutionary therapeutic technique, the couple made their way out of the darkness and back to each other. Through it all, Lily wrangled with her preconceptions about the military and found her place within the uniquely supported sisterhood of military wives.

From harrowing emotion to the dishy details of life on base, Lily Burana bares her heart and soul as a modern military spouse.

Reasons for buying this book: I am a military wife going through a deployment. Lifetime makes it seem like its fun and games and hanging with your girlfriends it is not like that. Its real and emotional.

The next book I bought was:

My Horizontal Life A Collection of One-Night Stands

From the Back Cover:

Meet Chelsea Handler. Gorgeous, sharp, and anything but shy, Chelsea loves men...lots of them. In this raucous collection of true-life stories, she chronicles her romp through the bedrooms of a variety of suitors. My Horizontal Life is a fearless acount of what can happen between a man and a sometimes very intoxicated, outgoing woman during one night passion.

From her short fling with a Vegas stripper to her even shorter dalliance with a well-endowed little person, from her uncomfortable tryst with a cruise ship performer to her misguided rebound with a man who likes to play leather dress-up, Chelsea recalls the highs and lows of her one-night stands with hilarious honesty. My Horizontal Life is one guilty pleasure you won't be ashamed to talk about in the morning.

Reasons for picking this book: I bought this for some light-hearted humor. I watch the show occasionally. I usually like books by comedian.

Review of 1984 by George Orwell

Summary From Amazon:Thought Police. Big Brother. Orwellian. These words have entered our vocabulary because of George Orwell's classic dystopian novel, 1984. The story of one man's nightmare odyssey as he pursues a forbidden love affair through a world ruled by warring states and a power structure that controls not only information but also individual thought and memory, 1984 is a prophetic, haunting tale.

More relevant than ever before, 1984 exposes the worst crimes imaginable-the destruction of truth, freedom, and individuality.
With a new forward by Thomas Pynchon.

About the Author from Amazon:

George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, born in 1903. He produced an impressive and critically acclaimed body of work, including his two most famous novels, Animal Farm and 1984. He died in 1950.

My Review:
I would like to say I found this book very disturbing yet interesting. Imagine the government controlling and monitoring everything you say or do. Telling you how you should eat and how you should dress. All this seemed to consume Winston Smith's mind. Every action he did made him wonder if the big brother(Government) was watching him.

All this changed when he met a woman named Julia who eventually becomes his lover. She is the symbol of rebellion against the government(Party). She is everything that Big Brother aims to destroy.

This book had me thinking about communism and how it would be if communism would have came to the USA. It is scary to think how the government could have that much power. This book is also a psychological thriller in which it makes you think and messes with you head.

Some memorable sayings or quotes from the novel that make you think:

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU how would you feel if the government is monitoring everything you do your right to privacy is violated
WAR IS PEACE is war really peace or is it a ploy for overall control.
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY are really slaves to the government, are we truly free
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH while keeping the outsiders of the government ignorant the government keeps its power.

Its amazing how some of these says make you think today and how this book is still relevant to human fears today. The fear of communism and socialism.

Overall I enjoyed this book and its one my favorites and I would reread it again.

What are you reading on Mondays

What I completed Last week?

I have not completed anything because of my twitter addiction lol. I am also reading several books at one time. This week I will complete at least 3-4 of them.

What I am reading this week:

Women in Love by D.H. Lawrence
War of the Roses by Alison Weir
Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
The Complete Illustrated Guide to Presidents of America by Professor Jon Roper

Mail Box Mondays

Mailbox Mondays

Today I received on book that I had won from my Tudor Talk book group on Friday. It is entitled:

But One Queen by Eleanor Roberts.
Published:1976
Publisher: New English Library, Great Britain

Its an older book and I could not find an image on Amazon and it does not have an ISBN number either.

From the Back Cover:

Lettice Knollys came to court young and innocent, as maid in waiting to Queen Elizabeth. Her beauty and her family connections assured her a splendid future at court, but her love for the Queen's favourite, Lord Robert Dudley nearly ruined them both.

This book looks very interesting partly because I love everything Tudor but also I love history and love to gain as much historical fiction that can get my hands on. This books is also by and English author who I have not heard of. I probably won't get to it till next week.

Thursday Tea

The Tea: Cinnamon Apple Tea
The Book: Women in Love by D.H. Lawrence

About the Tea: This is one of my favorite teas. I have been drinking it for about 2 yrs now. I first tried it while staying at the Residence Inn by Marriott when my house flooded and we had to get the floors repaired.

About the Book: I have been reading this book for almost a month and its very slow going. I guess cause I feel that it lacks a plot. It always seems like these 5 people are babbling back and forth about nothing. Hopefully will be done with this book by next week.

Hour 4 of the Read-A-Thon

Hour 4

I completed my goal in the book of Presidents of America. I made it from Madison to John Quincey Adams. A lot went on during those times with many wars still against the British. There was even an Indian Revolt head by Tecumsah. So now I am moving on to Women in Love for the next few hours. I am doing this book for another challenge group and also for the ABC challenge. This book is slow going for me so maybe this read-a-thon will help me catch up to where I need to be so I can finish it by the 30th of this month.

Pages read so far 65
Mins read since the beginning 120 mins. I tend to read 30 mins of the hour because of my twitter addiction and blogging lol.

Goal 65/1000

Updates for the 24 hr Reathon the first 3 hrs

Hour 1 update:
This hour I chose to read the Completed Illustrated Guide to Presidents of America by Professor Jon Roper. I only managed to read about 27 pages. Right now I am playing the role of a single parent since my hubby is deployed. So far its this book I have read through the Pre-Revolutionary war up to the the writing and signing of the Constitution I have not yet gotten to the start of the Presidents. I plan to read this book up to President Madison since that is how far I have gotten in the Presidents videos on the History Channel series.
So far everything is going great except for constant interruptions.

Pages read so far: 27pgs.

1. What I am reading today is stated above.
2. Three facts about me are I am doing this while my husband is deployed and my kids are around, I love to read and I will be tweeting my progress a little while doing this.
3. I have 8 book in my TBR pile will I finish them probably no where near.
4. My goals to make it through this challenge sane lol. I hope to read at least 1000pgs
5. I am a veteran and my advice is to take breaks and don't try to be superhero its alright if you need to sleep.

Hour 2
I have only managed to read 8 pages this hour again more interruptions I am at the point of frustration that my kids seem to be the only ones in America that can not entertain themselves and constantly fight each other. Any I have made it as far as how the electoral college was established into George Washington's Presidency to the duel of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr up to the beginning of the Presidency of John Adams. I learned that there was problems with with Bipartisanship even in the earlier days of the presidency.

Hour 3

I am almost to my daily goal for this particular book. I think I will finish my goal in the 4th hour. So far I have read 50 pages which is a long way from my goal hopefully my pace will pick up the book is a rather large book so it will take longer than a normal size book to read the pages. In the particular hour I read from the end of John Adams Presidency to the Beginning of James Madison's presidency.

Mail Box Mondays

I only received one book in the Mail this week. It is called The Complete Illustrated Guide to the Presidents of America by Professor Jon Roper

What are you reading on Mondays

Well I am doing a lot of monthly reads but I completed quite a few books this past week. I don't do reviews because I have a hard enough time reading with two children by myself. But here is what I completed this week:

The Gold Bug by Edgar Allan Poe
Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz by Frank Baum
